XO Multi-Sport Club members Derek Daniel, Aliya Drakes and Stephen Welch recently completed the Ironman 70.3 Augusta. The race which took place in Augusta, Georgia is the largest 70.3 in the United States and the second largest in the world.

Despite the unusually warm conditions that caused numerous athletes to suffer from the effects of dehydration, Daniel, Drakes and Welch became the first XO members to complete the grueling Ironman 70.3 and their achievement has encouraged other XO members to sign up to do their first Ironman 70.3 next year. The Ironman 70.3 consists of a 1,900 meter swim, 90 kilometer ride and finishes with a half marathon!

“This was a life changing experience for me. Ironman is the premier race in the sport of triathlon and I’m one step closer now to achieving my dream of doing a full Ironman. It took months of dedicated training and personal sacrifice but it was well worth it!” President and Coach for XO Derek Daniel said. The other locals that competed in the race in addition to Daniel, Drakes and Welch were Dr. Jacqueline Sabga, Gina Hart and Cherise Stauble, the group called themselves the “Augusta 6” and with a very vocal support group the Trinidad and Tobago flag was well represented. Ironman Coach Derrick Simon helped to prepare the group for the race. The “Augusta 6” was indeed a unique and harmonious coming together of local clubs to assist athletes in achieving their dreams.

XO Multi-Sport Club is a local club that is proudly sponsored by Atlantic, Massy Distribution (Grace), Onesta Consulting, Bryden & Sons (Great Grains), Gatorade and Dairy Dairy.
